She's an amazing friend, sister and colleague and a role model to any young lady aspiring to succeed in her career and personal life and keep it all in balance. Check out our awesome interview with the very down to earth and lovely, Miss Cristy Ayala.

1. Tell us a little bit of your background. Where did you grow up?

I was born and raised in beautiful sunny South Florida. I am half Cuban and half Ecuadorean but with my strawberry blonde hair and freckles I am often confused for a "gringa". I'm a happy-go-lucky energetic person who always has a smile on her face. I have a huge family (seriously, I meet a new cousin that just came from Cuba at every family function) and a large circle of friends. I'm always on the go.

I have been working for Carnival Cruise line for the past 9 years in their consumer sales department. I go with the flow and don't take my life to serious. You only live once, live it up and have fun.

2. If you can describe Miami in 5 words or less what would you say?

"Others vacation here, we play here."

3. I know you have raised money and helped organize great events for the Toys for Tots foundation for several years. Can you tell us more about that?

I love to do whatever I can to help out others. I feel I have been very blessed in my life and I like to give back. At my office, I serve on the Toys for Tot's committee and help organize two months of fundraising events. It's no easy task. There are bake sales, poker tournaments, happy hours, lunches and trunk shows. Any way that we can think of to try and raise funds for the foundation, we are doing. This year we raised over $35,000.00 and provided over 300 bikes to the organization.

As a kid Christmas was my favorite day, and knowing that I did something to help bring a smile to someone less fortunate is always the best gift I can receive each year.

4. What is your dream job?

Dream job would be to be a stay at home mom living off my Powerball winnings. LOL. One can dream right?

I would LOVE to be an event planner. I get a rush out of the excitement and stress of putting any party together. All of the details that go into a wedding, baby shower or birthday, you need to have an eye to take an empty space or blank canvas and transform it into the venue and event of someone’s dreams.

5. Could your dream job become a reality?

Maybe one day, my mother is always talking about wanting to start a business together and I get my creative eye and ideas from her. I am hoping one day we can start our own event planning company together.

6. Who inspires your style?

Right now, I love Kate Middleton. She has this classic down to earth style. She is effortless with her looks. She is not afraid to wear the same piece twice, She just styles it different.

Also, my Mina girls. Three amazing girls, with 3 unique styles. They aren't scared to try all the different looks that you see in a magazine and wonder "who would wear this?!?". Well, they can wear just about anything and rock it. I love that about them.

7. Trying to balance a full time job and a healthy social life can get tricky. What are some of your tips to balance them?

It's not easy, that's for sure. I'm actually writing this at the gym and it's 7:30 in the morning. I sometime’s wish I had a clone or more hours in the day. I like to keep a healthy balance of things.

While I'm at work, I work hard and make sure to take care of things while I am there. You work to live, not live to work. My family is very important to me. I will make sure to always to go to my mother’s house at least twice a week. Even if it's for 5 minutes, you need that love to stay sane.

My friends also help keep me grounded. I get together with my girls at least once a week to vent and laugh about the crazy things that go on in our lives. But the most important is my Cristy time. As long as you don't overdo any one area, you are golden. Moderation is KEY, in everything in life.

8. What is your favorite article of clothing hanging in your closet?

OMG! What kind of a question is this? I love everything I own!!!

Truthfully, I don’t think I have just one thing I love and can’t live without but if I had to pick one, I would say my plain, white v neck tee’s. You can dress it up or dress it down. You can basically wear it with anything and wear it anywhere!

I can't go without mentioning some of my other favorite pieces, my cut off jean shorts, my black platform pumps, my Gucci Boston bag and my diamond hoop earrings.

10. What do you love about shopping at Mina Miami Beach?

It’s a one stop shop. You can get a whole amazing look and not break the bank. I always love that they have a great eye and know how to style you. I can just go there, walk in and tell them “DRESS ME” and I know I will come out with amazing outfits. They don’t lie to you. They will be honest and tell you what looks good and what doesn’t work.

11. What advice would you give to young girls today?

Learn to laugh at yourself. We all make mistakes in life, but we live and learn. Life is a journey. It’s not about the destination but it’s all about the ride there. Enjoy it!

Meet December's Mina Maven Allison Freidin. Mina was delighted to have Allison as this month's Mina Maven. She is not only beautiful but smart... the whole package. This fierce Miami native, makes strolling into the court room in stilettos look easy. Take a look at her Q & A and get a little insight on how to keep it stylish and professional.

Tell us a little about your background. Where did you grow up?

I'm a 3rd generation Miamian!! My grandparents came here in the 1930's, which is super rare because there was no air conditioning at the time. Ew. Seriously though, I take so much pride in being from Miami because it's such a sexy city, but is also becoming more and more culturally in tune every day.

What made you want to become an attorney?

In law school I discovered it wasn't about the money, and that lawyers have the unique ability to fight for those who cannot fight for themselves. I also love an intellectual challenge and thinking on my feet.

How do you incorporate the latest trends at the office while still looking professional?

Silk, silk, and more silk! It is so important for professional girls to know that your clothes don't have to be ultra tight, low cut, or short to look fierce. I love pairing a silk blouse with just about anything. With a silk top, you can rock this season's colors and patterns, and still have people taking you seriously during a big deal negotiation. I also try to always wear one thing per day that makes me stand out -- something that I know no one else has. For instance, if I'm wearing all neutral colors, I'll be sure to pair it with bright and sparkly earrings, just to make sure I don't blend in with the other suits.

What kind of law do you practice? Do you ever plan on running for office?

Right now, I'm a criminal prosecutor. I spend most of my day in the courtroom. I love the dramatic element of being a lawyer and putting together a case for a jury. I try to appreciate that few attorneys my age get to go to trial like I do. I'm not sure what my next step in life is, but I definitely plan to ride this wave a little longer.

Tell us a little about some charity/ non-profit work you have done?

I recently joined the Miami Art Museum contemporaries. Its a group of young art enthusiasts. It's an awesome way to be philanthropic while staying in touch with my artistic side.

Who inspires your style?

My mom and I inspire each other. She's always been a high powered attorney, but raised me in Coconut Grove which is filled with hippies. I help my mom keep her style young, and she helps me keep it classy. My mom is the first to tell me the truth when one of my outfits goes too far.

When your not busy working you always seem to be doing something sporty. What is your favorite way to stay in shape?

I love walking my dog, Tyler, in Coconut Grove. Tyler and I have recently been scoping out some prime real estate availabilities in the Grove for the next Mina location.

What advice would you give young girls today that may want to follow in your footsteps?

Work hard! Even if you don't know what you want to do with your life, pick something and work hard at it for the time being. Strongly focusing and investing your all in a project is invaluable experience no matter what you decide to do with your future. The most rewarding moments of my life were when I got something I worked really hard for.

If you were to create awareness on one subject what would it be?

Skin cancer. I am fair skinned and I've lived in the tropics my whole life. I wish I was more careful growing up and protected my skin. Wrinkles and moles suck.

What is your favorite part about shopping at Mina Miami Beach?

The owners! Monica, Marianna, and Michelle each have their own point of view that they bring to the store. I started shopping with the Mina girls before a store front even existed. I feel so honored to watch the Mina empire evolve over the years and even more honored to be on their blog this December.

Mina Miami Beach chose this month’s Mina Maven for her exceptional taste. Annie Goldman is well known around Miami for her ability to transform any home, club, office or room to her client’s dream hangout. This beautiful Miami native can win you over rather quickly with her bubbly personality. Recently engaged to her longtime boyfriend Sean, she is ready to take on opening her own business and planning a wedding all while smiling and wearing the latest trends. Mina is so happy to have sat with Annie and asked her a few questions.

1. Tell me a little bit about your background.
I was born and raised here in Miami. I went to Palmetto High School, and for college I went to mostly UF in the beginning and then ended up in New York City, where I graduated from Parson's School of Design. I then lived in NY for about 5 years in total, and almost five years ago in January I moved back to Miami. I now live in South Miami, with my fiance Sean and our two doggies, Lola and Biggie Smalls.

2. Who inspires your wardrobe?
Jacqueline Kennedy,Axl Rose, and Kate Moss... I know that is all super random, but I kind of just keep it classic, but I funk it up a bit with a rock n roll edge... I always dress comfortably since my day always ends up having some aspect of manual labor or I walk a million miles. Plus Miami is such an amazing place since it is nice all year round, and we are in the tropics, so there is no need for a heavy or somber wardrobe.

3. How would you describe your personal interior design style?
I am like to say I am elegantly bohemian, but honestly I love all styles from supper traditional to ultra modern. I feel that it is my job as an Interior Designer to help my clients achieve their design aspirations thru my knowledge of decorative history and the trends that are really of the moment.

4. What is your favorite part about shopping at Mina Miami Beach?
I love the feeling that I am in a boutique that is filled with all essential go-to pieces of clothing. I honestly have so many life saving, staples in my wardrobe now since Mina opened. I also love that every time I wear something from Mina, I am bound to get compliments... I mean what girl doesn't love that!!!

5. What does someone starting as an interior designer career need to know?
That you are going to have to really maintain budgets and really accurate records. I never realized how much "business" there actually is in my business. I thought it was all colors and textures... it is that, but it is also a lot of meticulous record keeping.

6. What do you like most about an interior designer career?
Shopping!!! I actually get paid to shop. I also love the feeling that my clients get when they love their homes again, or that their office looks like they always wanted.

7. Do you think that being an interior designer can be seen in your fashion sense?
I think so. I once had a client tell me that she felt that I was the perfect designer for her since she loved the way I dressed. I thought that was such an amazing compliment.

8. What is your favorite item in your closet right now?
Well I am wearing my YSL Tributes all the time since they are the sexiest and most comfortable shoe, and I can't get enough of leopard print.

9. You are a bride to be! How did you go about chossing the dresses for bridemaids and picking you own wedding dress?
It was really important for me to look original yet classic, so my dress is being custom made. I can't tell you too much because I still need to surprise my fiance, but let's just say it is going to be supper sexy and supper classic. It was also really important to me to have my bridesmaids look like they are wearing dresses that you find in a boutique, not at a bridal store so I am having my dress maker copy a dress that my girlfriend once wore to an event where she looked amazing!

10. Starting your own company, planning a wedding and working as an interior designer must get a little difficult to handle. How do you unwind?
Laughter... I laugh with my fiance, my friends, my family, man I even laugh at my own self sometimes :)

11. If you could give a little advice to young ladies today that want to follow in your footsteps what would it be.
Make sure you intern or work for a few people before you go off on your own. You will learn so many valuable things about our business, about handling clients, and how to put out fires all the while smiling.

12. What is your prized possession?
My books...I find so much inspiration in books, and they look so beautiful on shelves and on coffee tables.

13. Leave us with your favorite quote.
It is not happy people that are thankful, it is thankful people that are happy.

Mina was so excited with all the nominees for this month's Mina Maven contest. Each of them was beautiful, smart and talented in her own way. We couldn't be more excited with this month's chosen Maven, Tiana Martinez. This 15 year old Miami Native focuses mostly on dancing and school. Her effortless beauty and confidence is transparent. She instantly becomes best friends with everyone in the room. It's no wonder she brought in over 600 votes. Below enjoy her photos taken by the boys over at Digital Twist Photography and a little insight into Tiana's day to day.

1. Describe a typical school day in your life.
My mornings start at 6:30am at my schools pavilion with most of my friends. We all gather to talk, laugh and copy what ever homework we did not do the night before. lol Once the bell rings at 7:00am the fooling around stops & work begins... As an IB Student a lot of work is expected but my teachers are all pretty cool and make our days worth while.

2. Where do you like to hang out?
Usually with my friends at each others houses or at parties.

3. What activities are you involved in inside and outside of school? Sports? Hobbies? Socializing?
I'm in a dance team called "Gablettes" which is a prestigious performance group of the high school I'm in. We've won Nationals twice and this year we're planning on keeping the title. :D

4. Whats your favorite TV show or Movie?
My favorite movies are Death Race & Step Up. DEATH RACE because not only is my sister in it but i love the action and STEP UP because its all about dance.

5. What are your plans after high school? Job? College?
Once I graduate from High School I'm going away to college. I'm hoping to be accepted in one of the two colleges of my dreams, PRINCETON or UCLA.

6. Describe your favorite outfit?
I dont have any preferences, depends on the location and event.

7. Whats your favorite subject in school?
I love Biology & Chemistry. Luckily they come easily so I hardly have to study for them. (:

8. High School isnt easy, what advice would you give to young girls that deal with bullies in school?
Always keep your head up high, don't let their insecurites become yours and last but not least, don't be afraid of speaking up and defending yourself !!

9. What is your proudest accomplishment?
When I started High School being the only Freshmen that made it to my dance team "Gablettes & Co."

10. If you could donate a million dollars to any charity what would it be and why?
St.Jude because all of those children suffering from cancer ... my heart & prayers go out to all of them and their families. ♥

11. How long have you been dancing? Whats your favorite type of dance to perform?
I've been dancing Ballet since I was 3 yrs old till 13 which is when I stopped after being in points.
During all those years I also danced Tap, Flamenco, Jazz, & my favorite Hip Hop. Now as a Gablette I'm also dancing Lyrical along with other types of dances such as modern and kick.

12. Does beauty just run in the family?
My family is not big at all, its just a few of us. However, we're all beautiful in our own special way.

13. What is your favorite part about shopping at Mina Miami Beach?
The staff is extremely loving & helpful. I always find what I'm looking for.

14. Got any dating advice for teenage girls?
I believe that everything happens for a reason. People change so that you can learn to let go. Things go wrong so you can learn to appreciate them when they are right. You believe lies so that you eventually learn to trust no one but yourself. And sometimes good things fall apart so that better things may fall together. So, don't cry for a guy who has left you, be happy because the next one may fall for your smile. (;

15. What general advice would you give young girls today?
Go confidently in the direction of your dreams!!

Mina Miami Beach searches for the perfect candidate for Mina Maven once a month, they have to be successful woman that have made a difference in their community and that Mina believes other young ladies should look up to. The perfect combination of beauty, smarts and ambition. This is why it was a no brainer too chose Nat Perez as September's Mina Maven. This talented Miami Native makes jumping from country to country in stilettos look easy. Mina was able to catch Nat Perez in between flights and ask her some questions. Take notes ladies.

1. Why did you decide to study fashion?

I spent ALOT of time in my grandmothers closet as a little girl; playing dress up and acting out, it was my favorite passed time. Later on as a teen I discovered my ability to reinvent my wardrobe in a matter of minutes without spending a dime.

I have always loved to and still shop at goodwill's, consignment stores and vintage boutiques. However, I always saw fasion as a hobby instead of profession. It wasn’t until I was in college that I realized it was something I could take seriously and dedicate myself. I have immense respect for Fashion, I consider it a form of art and expression.

2. What’s your background? Where do you live now?

I am product of a Cuban father and Colombian mother, born and raised in Miami, Florida. Right now I live... between hotels, airplanes, tour buses, and recently I got to stay on a beautiful yacht. I’m constantly moving from place to place so basically you can label me a Nomad :)

3. We heard you were into the performing arts tell us a little bit more about that...

Yeah I was one of those artsy kids, between dance, acting, singing and modeling, hardly a dull childhood and adolescence. I loved it (T.V Shows, commericials, Print ad's and dance competitions), it gave me fundamentals I use to this day, discipline and the courage to perform in front of whoever, whenever.

4. How has it been working with the multi Grammy winning singer and composer Alejandro Sanz?

It's amazing; I am Alejandro's personal assistant and stylist. The truth is it is a very demanding job, especially at first when you have no idea who and what you’re dealing with. What most people don't realize is that being the assistant to a person like Alejandro is more than just interaction with him. I also work closely with his family, friends (including fellow artists), his company Gazul, management RLM, record label Universal and of course his fans that are international! You really have to position yourself in the middle of all those people and make sure everyone has the correct access and attention they deserve. Aside from his entourage and following, he is the most down to earth individual. He is super talented and centered, much more than just the musician everyone knows. He is a smart business man, painter, writer, photographer, among his many hobbies the man is a genius constantly creating and sharing his visions. "Estar rodeada de tanto arte" Being surrounded by all this art, is incredible I have learned sooooo much from Alejandro it feels like I went back to school and got a Masters...haha seriously though in order to succeed next to Alejandro or someone of his caliber, you ALWAYS have to be on point. Since the first day I started with the Sanz group they have pushed me to excellence and because of that I have discovered things about myself I never imagined I could do. My favorite part of the job without a doubt has to be styling him, I love shopping and creating looks for him that later on get analyzed and critiqued by many, via photo shoots, red carpets, editorials, directors and producers worldwide. Oh wait one more! Watching him perform live! The way he transcends to millions of people at the same time, each word lyric and verse is pure love. I am always very close onstage at all performances, my view of the audience is ever-changing but the effect is always stunning!

5. I know your job sends you to a lot different locations, tell me a little bit about your travels and what’s your favorite destination?

It's crazy! In the past 2 years I have been to so many countries it’s hard to compare and remember. LOL To name a few the majority of Spain, South America, Central America, Mexico, and the US. My favorite... whoa that's tough! Could be Rio de Janeiro, Brazil or Buenos Aires, Argentina, or Barcelona, Spain or Lima, Peru of course Los Angeles ... can't decide sorry!

6. What is it like being on tour?

It's a huge experience kind of chaotic, extremely fun, and tiring. You have to imagine being on the road with approximately 50 people who eventually become a big weird family, and although you are surrounded by many; everyone is doing their own thing so technically you are alone. This is by far the emotional challenge, spending time with your family and loved one is sacrificed and accommodated to vacations, emails and Skype! On a brighter note it is very interesting to watch & learn the logistics of big tour, especially the responsibilities of each member and the importance of working as a unit. Emphasizing on the professionalism everyone must carry out on an international level. Without a doubt adventuresome and before you know it you done been everywhere and back.

7. Currently what are some of your favorite designers out of Miami?

There are a couple... Maya swimwear, amazing shoes by Alejandro Inglemo, everything Gold Saturn by David Jon Acosta, jewels by Mar y Soul, NK designs, two sisters making the cutest jewelry, and Priscilla Jade Lingerie.

8. How did you hear about Mina Miami Beach?

Well I've know the Minagorri sisters since high school, they have always been very fashionable and beautiful girls, naturally I always kept up with their projects. When it came to Mina, Facebook played a huge roll; friends of ours would constantly brag and post hot pics with clothes and looks of their pieces. Since we all love to be fabulous on a budget it was a no brainer for me to check it out their boutique and fashion shows.

9. Do you speak Spanish fluently? How has this helped you career wise?

Claro que si! Of course I do, ever since I was little, but you know what? I swore I was fully bilingual until the day I arrived in Spain and quickly noticed my "Spanish" was substantially different to the REAL deal. After various embarrassing moments, I encouraged people to correct me. The language has definitely helped my work since I am constantly in communication with Spain, Mexico and Latin America; the benefits of being bilingual are priceless.

10. What is you fashion pet peeve?

When girls wear clear bra straps and VPL (visible panty lines). Guys please keep your sneakers crispy clean, and NO more baggy pants with no belt and your underwear all out, can’t even take two steps before you got to pull up... mess!

11. Where do you get your fashion inspiration from? What tips do you have for us?

Depends what I'm in the mood for... perhaps a combination of some of my favorite artists Audrey Hepburn, Janis Joplin, Marilyn Monroe, Gwen Stefani and Jennifer Lopez. Plus it’s nice to have a great group of fashionable girlfriends. Every time we get together its fun to see what each is wearing and how they made it their own.

As for the tip, I'd like to go straight to the beauty department; I think it is essential when completing a look. My 3 musts are... Hair that is nicely cut and styled, a fresh mani pedi, and for the face a good moisturizer is key also daily makeup = less is more :)

12. Tell me about the fashion designers and fashion shows you have worked on?

Back when I was on the fashion grind, I worked production on runway shows (i.e.: Miami Fashion Week, Oscar de la Renta, Zac Posen) and PA to celebrity wardrobe stylists, as well as assisting Venezuelan haute couture designer Nicolas Felizola. I really wanted to learn different angles of the game having one thing clear I did NOT want to sit behind a desk all day. Some people love the daily routine thing, and that's awesome for them but I need constant change. I love the challenge of trying new things just to see how eclectic I can be.

13. Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

I've got dreams and things of that nature, but at this moment, I can only see the now.

14. You just came out of a worldwide tour, what are you working on now?

I am currently in Mexico D.F. styling Alejandro for the TV show La Voz Mexico, where he participates as one of the coaches alongside Alex Syntek, Lucero and Espinoza Paz. This show was recently in the states as The Voice with Christina Aguilera, Adam Levine, Ceelo Green and Blake Shelton as coaches. I am also working on a very cool emerging clothing line as a designer; unfortunately I cannot release more info, but stay tuned we are hoping to launch fall 2012.

15. What general advice would you give young girls today?

The same words I tell my younger sister...

*Treat others how you want to be treated; Karma can be your BEST friend.

*Capitalize on your natural talents.

*Don't be lazy! If you are not satisfied with anything in your life YOU have the power to change it, formulate a plan and EXECUTE it. Don't wait for any handouts if you want something you MUST work hard for it!

*Once you graduate school DON'T stop learning! Whenever you’re bored go to a Barnes & Noble’s or whatever bookstore and walk the isles... you will discover interests in subjects you never imagined.

*Independence is a virtue. Being alone at times is not scary, uncool or boring... Get to know you, just you without anyone around, this can also help you appreciate the ones who surround you. The most efficient, creative and mentally evolving moments of my life thus far have been when no one is around.

In this day and age it is rare to find something different, something that hasn't been done before. Sure we see different designs everyday but what separates one from the next is one's own individuality. That is exactly what Mina Miami Beach discovered with La'Mod by Christina Brooke. With Christina Brookes line of leather handbags and accessories for the uptown everyday girl with a little edge, she sets the bar pretty high. Christina has mixed a fusion of colors and materials creating a rare and sexy design for her handbags and signature scarf necklaces. Mina took a few minutes to sit and talk with this beautiful Miami native. Below read the Q&A and get a little insight into Christina Brooke's personal life and career. With a talent like hers the sky is the limit.

1. Tell me a little bit about your background?

I was born and raised in Miami, Fl I am a trained vocalist and spent most of my years growing up performing in various productions including operas like Carmen and Tosca. The Arts and design have always been close to my heart even in middle school you would often find me revamping old clothes to make them in again. So of course I had to study something in design, so I graduated from FIU with a bachelors in Architecture. After graduation I was accepted to some fabulous masters programs for architecture including the Southern California Institute for Architects (SCI-ARC), but decided to decline the acceptance for a few years to purse another dream fashion and that's when the idea of La' Mod was born.

2. What inspired you to start your own line?

When designing in the field of architecture you are sometimes very limited to what you can actually build so accessories and fashion was a way for me to let go of all my designs without such strong restrictions. I wanted to create a line where there is a visibly strong focus on the design but at a price point that everyone could buy it. 4. Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

In five years, well I always think big so.. In five years I see La'Mod branching into clothes or shoes as well as having maybe a few La'Mod stores.

5. What do you enjoy most about shopping at Mina Miami Beach?

The vibe, its such a cool fun place to be and of course seeing my good friends there is an added bonus. The Minagorri girls have done a wonderful job keeping the boutique upbeat and on trend!

6. Describe what an ideal date would be for you?

Honestly I work so much that an Ideal date for me is doing absolutely nothing at home with my dog codie and Love Alex.

7. Looking back, what advice would you give to your high school-self now if you could?

Do exactly what you are doing, because you are going to have a fantastic time and all the things you are going to go through are going to make you who you are today!

8. What do you do when you are not working so hard?

Drawing, I spend a lot of time sketching, I love traveling especially out of the country I am lucky to have visited some amazing places and still theres a whole lot I need to see.

9. Tell us about the best part of designing your own line?

Everything you do is based off of an idea you had in your head that turns into this amazing product and then you get to see people wearing it, its great. I love to see peoples reaction, its so fun to learn what people like or don't like, its quite interesting.

10. What do you think of todays' trends?

I am not so into the 80's thing thank god thats ending. I really would just like to start a few trends really.. lol

11. Who is your inspiration/role model?

I have a few my mother of course because honestly there is no one on this earth like her, my father for his business teaching me about business and of Course my longtime boyfriend for being the one person who saw I had a true passion for something and has been helping me all the way with just about all the business side of the company.

12. If I wanted to purchase something from La' Mod where would I go to see the merchandise?

La' Mod by Christina Brooke will be launching in October 2011! Our Lookbook is up on www.lamoddesigns.com. We will have an online retail store on our website opening late October, and of course we will be selling wholesale to retail locations interested in carrying our products. We also have plans to open our first retail store sometime in the near future.

13. If you could give general advice to young girls today what would it be?

Follow your dreams, do what you are truly passionate about so that at the end you feel like you did everything you wanted and have no regrets!

Mel, give us a little background. Where did you grow up? Where are you originally from?
I was born and raised in Miami Fl, with Cuban/Spanish decent. People never guess it though.

We hear you are the new Beauty Editor at www.glamrush.com what is the site about and what are your responsibilities?
I'm really excited to be a part of the hottest new website for beauty. The site will be your ultimate beauty resource, a one stop shop for all beauty needs and I will be managing their editorial page and content.

What celebrities have you worked on, in your career as a professional makeup artist?
I've worked with artist like Shakira, Alejandro Sanz, Ciara, Nikki Taylor and Carmen Electra, to name a few.

Mina loves a story where a Miami Girl does well. How did you get to become successful and get such a great list of clients?
Makeup has always been a passion of mine. I started straight out of high school. It is funny because I never saw it as a career. I can work 14 hours straight and never complain once. That's my idea of a perfect job. Do something you love and you will never work a day in your life.

We gotta ask, is it purely talent or did you get training?
Ha ha yes, training was defitnitely helpful. I remember when I started all I did was wear white eye shadow all over my eye because I was scared of color. Then I learned... It's just makeup, if you do not like it, you can just take it off. What a concept!

Any quick tips on how to apply daily makeup?
Cover what you hate; Define what you love and MASCARA!

What is the one go to item that you have in your closet right now that you can't live without?
My Brush Belt!

Who has inspired your look throughout the years both fashion and beauty?
My mother, She's flawless! I remember staring at her get ready for two hours in AWE.

What is your favorite item that you have purchased from Mina Miami Beach?
Definitely my black Gaia Bikini and my Karlee Feed Your Headband. Every time I wear either of those items I get complimented. Never fails. I am a HUGE Mina Miami Beach fan. Where else can a girl walk into a store and walk out thirty minutes later with a great outfit for the night for under $100!

What is the biggest mistake woman make when applying makeup?
I hate it when I see woman following their friend's beauty regime. Just because your friend uses twelve products does not mean you have too. Find a local beauty expert, tell her/him your concerns and go from there. Or you can always email me at mvalenzuela@glamrush.com I'm pretty good about returning my emails.

We know your job makes you travel a lot. Is this a perk or does it become a little overwhelming sometimes?
I love my job, the traveling comes with the territory. All this traveling has definitely made me more patient. The small stuff that I used to sweat, delayed flights or traffic, don't bother me anymore. I just kinda giggle when I see someone going crazy in the airport over something that is completely out of their control.

What is some advice you would give young girls today that aspire to be in the same line of work as you?
Makeup artist usually have a huge ego this usually inhibits their growth. Be humble and fabulous at the same time. It is a tough business but following my advice will set you a part. Don't let anything get the best of you.

Mina Miami Beach sits down with the creators of FKCNCR (F@#! Cancer) and talks about their new foundation and how locals can come out and show their support. With so many families being affected by this sickness, its refreshing to see Carlos and Laz's almost playful and light way of taking it on and saying F@#! CANCER!

What inspired you two to create FKCNCR?
I guess I wanted to do an edgier, hip foundation for our generation that do wonderful things but wanted to keep it PG, and we totally respect that but our foundation says what we all are feeling, FKCNCR. We understand it's a strong message but for once lets have our true human emotions come out because somehow we have all been affected by cancer.

Carlos how long have you been fighting cancer and how has it affected your life?

I was diagnosed with Hodgkins at the age of 21. I'm turning 33 this year and I'm still fighting so it's going to be 12 years now. As far as how it has affected me, I have mixed feelings. Traveling to see doctors and all the numerous treatment centers, transplants, and test that I have done suck but what kills me the most is how it affects my love ones around me. I hate to see my mom cry, my dad stressed, my sister down, or friends and family worried about me. This is why I am always positive and joking around, it's who I am but it is also so that those around me can keep high spirits. I know this may sound a little crazy but I'm sometimes thankful for what I have been through because it has not only made me a stronger person, but most importantly this experience has allowed me to meet Laz, and his amazing wife Suzy, and tons of great friends. Cancer has been a curse and a blessing at the same time.

What made you guys choose such an edgy name for your foundation?

We have always loved challenges and hate the typical cookie cutter style. We love pushing the limits to see how close we can get to the stars. I know FKCNCR isn't perhaps the most professional title, but IT IS the way the way that people feel without having the courage or ability to speak their minds.

How long have you and Laz known each other?

I'd say too long, lol. We have known each other since 2002 where we both attended art school together. We immediately clicked when we made fun of my hand drawn animations. I don't have a brother but because of my cancer I now do, and I am forever thankful for that.

How was FKCNCR created?

Carlos was enduring one of the toughest experiences in his life with the cancer and jokingly began to say "F" Cancer. His comment stuck and became a new way of dealing with his condition. It slowly developed into a facebook fan page and is continuing to grow more than we had ever expected.
If you know Laz and I you already know that we're out there. We are kids at heart, and constantly joking around, and enjoying life as much as possible.

Who's idea was it?

Laz came up with the FKCNCR title. I thought it was awesome because it said how we felt, but did not look offensive and it had an edgy vibe to it. Carlos made the logo for it so that we could make shirts for ourselves. I thought it would be funny to do a hand giving "the bird" with the middle finger having a cancer ribbon tied around it.

Tell me a little about the event you two are planning to launch the FKCNCR movement.

The event is pretty much a coming out party. We are hoping it will be the first of many. The reason behind them is simply to raise money so we can help those finding ways to end their battle against cancer. Since our foundation is a bit more cutting edge and because of who we are, the events are going to be more up beat and livelier than your traditional fund raising events. We are going to have a DJ, silent auctions with some great items, models wearing the latest FKCNCR gear, and a fashion show hosted by Mina Miami Beach. The event will take place at The Stage. Tickets will be on sale shortly, stay tuned for more details.

How can locals help?

It's pretty simple, donate money. The more money we raise the more we can help those in need. Local companies can donate their services in the silent auction as well. It could be a laundry service, restaurant, gas station, travel agency, or whatever. Not only will they be doing it for a good cause but they will have their names out there for the hundres of FKCNCR followers too see.

Is there a website set up where people can get a little more information on FKCNCR organization?

We are in the process of doing that. We have the domain www.FKCNCR.org it is currently under construction. For the time being you can like us on facebook or follow on twitter and Welcome to the FKCNCR family.

Laz, we know cancer hits home for you. What advice would you give to the families and friends in dealing with love ones that are going through a tough time with cancer?

A positive attitude is always the best medicine. No matter what you are going through, a smile, a joke, a hug will always help you cope with the situation. Having a support system is very important, especially when they remain positive alongside you. I see Carlos and live based on the example that he has shown me, treasure every moment you have making a difference, and share those times with those closest to you instead of making the situation more difficult on yourself and your loved ones.

Carlos, one of the most impressive things about you is how your spirits are always so high. What advice would you give to those in your similar situation?

I always feel weird when people tell me I inspire them and that I'm their hero. I ask myself why? Because I want to live? I guess the best advice I can give someone going through what I'm going through is to look at those around you. Your family, friends, even pets! Don't you want keep living to spend time with them? Don't you want to enjoy life? I understand it's easy to quit and not fight but where's the fun in that? Life is full of challenges and that is why it is exciting. Life is a gift. Don't give away that gift so easily.

1.) How did you like growing up in Miami?

I absolutely loved growing up in Miami. Beaches, sunshine and shopping- oh my!

2.) Who are some woman that have inspired your wardrobe?

Grace Kelly is my style icon: classic beauty meets timeless glamour.

3.) What do you like most about shopping at Mina Miami Beach?

The jewelry and custom-made accessories are hands down my favorite part about shopping at Mina. Not only are they one of a kind, but they are stunning too!

4.) We here you are a published author. Tell us a little about that?

I recently wrote two children’s books, Team Blue Devils and Best Spot in the Gardens. They were inspired by my experiences at Duke and intended to reflect the Blue Devil way of life. It has been such an exciting experience for me and I’m looking forward to see what the future holds. Author by day, fashionista by night. I could get used to that J

5.) Tell us about you academic accomplishments.

I’m currently a junior at Duke University where I am studying Psychology and Political Science. I spend way too much time in the library in hopes that one day I will have actual academic accomplishments to brag about. Until then, all I have to show for myself is are a lot of textbooks and countless all-nighters in the library.

6.) Do you and your sister borrow/share clothes?

My younger sister Andrea could not be more different than me, especially when it comes to fashion and style! Whereas my sister rocks Nike Dunks and a leather jacket on a daily basis, I prefer stilettos and bombshell dresses. With that being said, every now and then, it’s fun to abandon the glitter and sequins and channel my inner hipster.

7.) How has college life been treating you?

Not to be cliché, but I study hard and party harder. They call it the best four years of your life for a reason!

8.) We know you have recently been studying abroad. Do you see a drastic difference in trends and style and if so has it affected your style?

For Europeans, fashion is a way of life. While I was living in Barcelona, I was amazed at how the women brought the runway to the street so effortlessly, Not only were they so put together, but they were so trendy and innovative with their clothes. Since my return to America, I just can’t look at a pair of sweatpants the same. Whoever said pain is beauty, was definitely from Europe. I’m fairly positive that they don’t even sell sweatpants abroad!

9.) Tell us a random fact about yourself?

I sleep in tube socks every night. Don’t ask me why, I just do.

10.) What's your relationship status?

Very single.

12.) If you could give advice to young ladies today what would it be?

Always put your best foot forward and ideally, do so in beautiful shoes.

13.) Tell me a little about any accomplishments you have done outside of academics?

I recently was admitted to the Duke Engage in Washington D.C. program for this upcoming summer. I will be working for Rock the Vote, a non-profit whose mission is to empower the youth of America to get involved in the political arena.

14.) Anything you are particularly proud of?

My family. Not only is my family so successful and driven in terms of their careers, but they are the most generous and giving people a girl could ask for. From fashion advice to life advice, my family are the first people I go to.

15.) Has it been difficult living away from your family?

It’s really tough sometimes, especially when I’m craving a good café con leche (good coffee is really hard to come by up at school). It’s easy to keep in touch, but there is no place like home with the family!

16.) What is the one item in your closet that you can’t live without?

My black patent leather peep-toe pumps, they’re so classic and go with everything!

February's Mina Maven

Our year begins in February and as they say, better late than never….and better is right! Our February MINA Maven, Elisa Diaz, sets the bar high for 2011. As a sophomore at Coral Reef Senior High School, Elisa or Eli as her friends call her, is an avid reader, an aspiring actress, a philanthropist, a football fan, a shoe diva and of course, a MINA maven.

She may be young, but make no mistake, Eli knows what’s important – family and friends. She truly values her family and all her friends, “I really like hanging out with my friends and think friendship is one of the most important things in life”. She also understands the importance of giving – not only of your money, but of your time and of yourself. Eli has had the opportunity to work with Best Buddies International, a non-profit organization that creates opportunities for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. “My school has special education classes that intertwine with the Best Buddies program, partnering a high school student with a high school student with Autism. I have lunch with my buddy every Friday.” Separately, Eli has also worked with the Autism Society, Habitat for Humanity and Camillus House. Where does she get her inspiration? Her parents. “It may sound like a cliché, but my role models would have to be my parents. They both have gone through struggles to get to where they are today. Every successful person has had obstacles to overcome. I’ve just been lucky enough to have my role models live with me.”

With all that being said, what else does our MINA Maven do? What does she like? Well…acting seems to be one of her passions. She began acting in elementary school when she joined a company called ‘Shakespeare in the Park’. The company is similar to the one in New York, putting on free performances at least twice a year. Since then, her acting has blossomed. She has attended performing arts schools, including South Miami Middle’s Magnet Drama Program, as well as the visual and arts academy she attends now, Coral Reef Senior High School.

Her future plans? She has many! She’s only 15, but has plans on attending college. She’s even contemplating law school. “Throughout my life, I've always changed what I wanted to do for a living, but being an attorney is the idea that has stuck around the longest. I'd love to go to law school and have a BFA in theatre.” But wait, her plans don’t stop there, she also wants to travel – extensively. Her ideal plan: “I would also love to travel to Europe. It's always been a dream of mine and I love love love to travel! I have high expectations for my future and I can't wait to begin accomplishing them.”

As you can clearly read, Eli is a bit wiser than the average 15 year old. Why you ask? Well, you may have heard of her father, Manny Diaz, the former Mayor of the City of Miami. Eli has grown up a bit faster than most kids – she’s been in the spotlight a bit more. In her own words, “Since my dad became mayor when I was 5 years old it definitely made me grow up faster than other kids. I had the benefit of meeting a lot of influential people in society and also attending a lot of things that lots of kids growing up don't. I love that he was a politician, it gave me a different perspective on life and I think I'm a lot more mature now because of it".

But wait, there's more to Eli, we can't forget her very eclectic sense of style. "If I were to describe my style, it would have to be contrasting. My wardrobe includes everything from combat boots to oxfords to vintage high-waisted jeans to little black dresses". Her collection also boasts a watch for almost every mood, every outfit. Her greatest obsession...shoes. She says it's genetic...maybe Mom has something to do with this one.

Hats off to our February MINA Maven, Elisa Diaz, you've accomplished a lot in your 15 years...we know you're going to accomplish a whole lot more!

Meet this months Mina Maven...

BIANCA PADILLA

Tell us a little bit about your day to day.

Right now I am a senior at Gulliver Prep and have my hands full with applying to colleges. It’s completely time consuming.

Between writing essays ,writing my resume, getting community service hours, SAT’s, ACT's and the SAT 2, I don’t have time for much. It’s a lot, but I am excited about it and working towards my goals.

You did a summer program at Harvard?

Yes, it was a summer program where only a few high school students were selected to live on campus and take college credit courses . I was only 16 when I did it and we were basically living the college experience. Since I was already taking business classes in high school, I thought this would be a great opportunity to get college credits in Science and Philosophy.

One of my aspirations is to one day own my own hospital. For this, while at Harvard I took two courses, one in Neurobiology and the other in Biomedical Ethics. Overall it was an incredible experience.

Your grandfather, Herberto Padilla was one of Cuba's leading poets whom sparked worldwide controversy when he was placed under arrest for "subversive writing" because of the verses in his award-winning 1968 anthology, Fuera del Juego (Out Of the Game) where he expressed dissatisfaction with the Castro regime.

Can you tell us how this has influenced you?

When I think of my grandfather, I think of how brave he was. He had the courage to speak his mind and share it with the world in spite of the consequences that he knew he would face.

I admire him for teaching me to set my goals and to never be afraid to go after them.

I would like to think that I have the qualities to one day become a good leader in whatever career path I choose and I know that I get this from both my grandfather and my father, whom I admire greatly.

My father co-founded Padilla Cigars and is an international distributor for the Carrier Corporation. I have always looked up to him, I love how he works and I admire his dedication and ambition.

People pay attention to him when he talks, his demeanor demands attention. He is very business savvy and he gains peoples trust and that is what is most important.

He always tells me he did it for us, to give us the life he never had.

You mentioned community service hours earlier, are there any organizations that you are currently involved with?

I am involved in the Susan G Kohmen Race, I attend every year since my mom was diagnosed in 2007. She is a survivor and this is one of the causes that I am most passionate about. One in every four women will be diagnosed with breast cancer.

Also, my friends and I set up an organization called Break the Bonds to help raise awareness for Human Trafficking. Human trafficking is very real and we are fighting to bring awareness to others.

After some research, I decided that this was the best organization to donate to because they work directly with the community, not only to help those people affected by human trafficking, but prevent it as well by educating people of their rights.

We started an international cultural fair and raised over $30,000.00.

What is your inspiration when it comes to your wardrobe?

I love the Teen Vogue editorials and Chloe and Chanel are two of my favorites. For a local designer, designs from Alexis Barbara is my top pick.

But, as much as I like the pretty and classic look, I also love some grunge, I guess it depends on what mood I am in. That’s the fun part about fashion, it always changing.

What’s your must have piece?

Toms. I have 5 pairs , I wear them everyday to school and I think the concept is great. Every time you buy a pair, a second pair is donated to a child in need.

What’s your favorite part about shopping at Mina?

Affordability. I can walk out of Mina without spending too much. They have great clothes and I love the jewelery. Also, the Gaia bathing suits have a great fit.

Any advice you would like to share?

Take care of your reputation and don't stress out too much.Do your best in school and most importantly, remember to have fun J
